Some will like it, some will not. But, I think, despite all the issues I have with the game, I could not stay away, even if I wanted to.
Okay, so I’m pretty sure everyone has heard of Elder Scrolls, at least in passing, if nothing else. Elder Scrolls is a series of games developed by Bethesda. The very first game was released in 1994 to tell you how old the series itself is, and was called Elder Scrolls: Arena. There are five games in the series total, and I am not sure if ESO makes six or not.
This is the ancient cover art for ESA.
So, Elder Scrolls online is a new MMORPG created by the beloved Bethesda in the Elder Scrolls universe. Can you believe it? An Elder Scrolls MMORPG? How exciting is that? Well, yes and no, there were a lot of people who were unsure about it, and with good reason. Here is the story of my brief trip in ESO.
So my husband rented the game for me, because he knows how much of a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls series I am. I had the game for a blessed 24 hour period until I had to return it. The plan was to play it, to see if I wanted to buy it. Well I did, and it gave me mixed feelings to be honest.
Character Creation
The character creation was beautiful; I felt that it had a lot more freedom than the Skyrim character creation on Xbox 360 and, not only that, but you got to choose how you wanted your body to look. I am a fan of small waists with a hips, ass, and bust but you never got to do that with any of the elder scrolls games and to be honest, the earlier ones had horrible figures. So, you get to choose the ratio of various parts, which made me excited. I made a lovely Dark Elf character, a good balanced race to start with.
Not the character I made, but a good example of what it’s like to create.
Game Play
In the beginning I noticed right away that you could not pick up anything that was not tied down like you were able to in the single player games. You could only grab things that were actually tied to something, like alchemy or cooking. Okay not that big of a deal, but it is kind of a huge change, I quite like to take things from around the world and put them in whatever house I buy and decorated it how I see fit, but I suppose you won’t end up with 20 pieces of linen cloth and embalming tools because you accidently grabbed them when you were just trying to grab the gold on the table.
Another thing that irked me a little was that you cannot save the game. It plays like an MMO and it honestly took me a minute for my ditzy brain to realize that. I like to save before I steal things, so that if I get caught I can just reload and try again. You can’t do that here. If you go and try to attack the guards for killing you right before you reach a fence you WILL die. They will take your gold and items and leave your body to rot in the streets. Why is that? The guards are un-killable! What kind of shit is that!? Killing the guards is always a satisfying endeavor for the random adventure, and they took that away from us, why? Why, Bethesda? Why do you hate us so?
Also, I kind of get the feeling that some things are in real time. Like you have to come back the next day in real life or something, I could be wrong about this though. Another thing I found slightly annoying was that it seemed that you had to get QUITE a lot of supplies in order to actually make something at any of the benches. I mean like you need ten of something that might or might not be hard to find in order to make ONE thing. A little bit ridiculous.
Communication
Okay, so my first communication with someone in the game was this one idiot who kept on yelling around the newb area. “Anyone want to buy my recipe!? Only 500 GOLD!! It’s WAY better than anything YOU guys have!”
I’m sitting there, minding my own business, checking out a clothing bench thinking, “I barely have 100 gold to my name, how does he expect to sell that in the newbie zone?”
Then he comes right up to me, and tries to start a trade, which I ignore because, WTF, I’m busy.
Then he goes, “HEY Experiment Zero! You want to buy this recipe?!!” and you know me….well you don’t, but I’ll tell you that I have a very bad temper.
So I respond with, “NO, I don’t want to buy your STUPID fucking RECIPE! Go the fuck AWAY!” and you know he gets all butt hurt and says something like “Damn fuck, geez.” To which I reply: “If I wanted your recipe I would have answered you, besides I DON’T HAVE 500 FUCKING GOLD, I JUST started!”.
So that was my first interaction over my shiny new headset on my PS4 in ESO. It could have been worse.
Again, not the conversation I had, but I didn’t have the forsight to save it for posterity. *sigh*
Quests
Like usual, there are quests anywhere and everywhere about just about anything, I decided I wanted to do some Mages Guild quests, which turned out to be kind of interesting and involved Shalidor himself. If you don’t know the lore, Shalidor is a very old and very dead mage from a long time ago, who was so fucking brilliant, that people still try to study his teachings to this very day. Oh, and also there was Sheogorath. Damn is he sexy….Yes, I am attracted to crazy. Cheese for EVERYONE!
In conclusion you should give it a try. Some will like it, some will not. But, I think, despite all the issues I have with the game, I could not stay away, even if I wanted to.
