Let me start by giving you my brief opinion of the show in general. Being a huge Batman fan, I can appreciate what they are trying to do with “Gotham”. I only have a few real issues with the show.
One: The ages of some of the characters. In the comics, it seems at least, that pretty much everyone is roughly the same age, with a few exceptions. Penguin, Gordon, Mr. Freeze and Hugo Strange all seem to be older than Bruce Wayne. On the show, it bothers me that Edward Nygma is older than Bruce.
Two: All of the Easter eggs. Yes, we know there are plenty of villains in the Batman universe. But do we really need to see 50% of them in the first few episodes?
Three: Penguin stealing the show. FOX stated that “Gotham” is about James Gordon and his career moving through the ranks at the GCPD. In MY opinion, Oswald steals every scene he’s in. Not only does Robin Lord Taylor(Oswald Cobblepot) gives a far superior performance over Ben McKenzie’s(James Gordon) monotone/dry acting, but Penguin’s story is also much more interesting.
Overall, I feel that “Gotham” has A lot of potential and I hope FOX gives it a fighting chance, unlike so many of the great shows they cancelled without a second thought.
NOW, ONTO THE REVIEW OF “The Mask”
SPOILERS, SWEETIE!
Other than a few Easter eggs, this episode wasn’t impressive.
We are introduced to Richard Sionis (Todd Stashwick), the precursor to the “Black Mask” that we all know and love. In the comics, Black Mask is Roman Sionis, whose first appearance is in Batman #386. One can only assume that Richard is Roman’s father. I didn’t really care for the personality of Richard Sionis very much. To me, it just seems like he wouldn’t have gotten to be where he is in life by acting the way he did in this episode. But, one can argue that’s also why he finally got caught… Also, granted, his mask should have been different than what Roman would be wearing, but DAMN. They could have gotten a cooler looking mask.
We are ALSO introduced to Tommy Elliot (Cole Vallis). For those of you that don’t know, he grows up to be the Batman villain “Hush” who first appears in Batman #609. The “Hush” storyline is a highly recommended read for any Batman fan. The origin is a bit different on the show, though.
Tommy and Bruce start out as enemies, but as long as they become good friends like in the comics, it storyline should meet up nicely with the comic.
There is some drama as Liza(Makenzie Leigh) AKA Fish’s “weapon” against Falcone, starts to develop feelings for Carmine Falcone(John Doman). She hesitates putting a sleeping drug in his tea so she can steal some paperwork for Fish.
The scene with Fish Mooney(Jada Pinkett Smith) and Oswald sitting at the table talking about “peace” was a highlight. Fish is easily the second most interesting character on the show, only beat by Oswald himself. The hatred between the two is apparent and well-defined. More so than Fish, Oswald does a great job of hiding his deception. And yes, I COULD tell that Fish was going to stab Oswald with the broach.
Now, to get into James Gordon and Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue). What can I say? Harvey keeps getting more likable in every episode. He really stepped up in this most recent episode following the issues with other cops from the previous episodes. It almost seems like Bullock is starting to care and wants to be a good cop. As far as Gordon goes, I don’t know if its McKenzie’s acting or just how the character is supposed to be, but I don’t care much for Gordon. His character’s storyline is riddled with terrible events and I can’t drag up a single ounce of sympathy.
In conclusion, this episode is setting up for something major about to go down on the show, or at least it better be. The show need something more. It’s unclear what exactly, but it needs something to tip the scales. It’s worth continuing to watch to find out.
3 outof 5
