Marvel’s Old Man Logan #1 arrived this week as a new ongoing series follow up to the 2008/2009 Wolverine: Old Man Logan and 2015 Secret Wars Logan storylines. Multiple universes, alternate realities, and time travel make for a complicated back story, but issue one is pretty straightforward with Logan’s intentions from here on out: cold, bloody retribution.
Let’s get up to speed, shall we? At the conclusion of last year’s Secret Wars, Marvel introduced the “All new, All Different” universe. In this universe, there are two incarnations of Wolverine: X-23/Laura Kinney and a time-traveling Logan who is, well, an old man.
During the ‘08/’09 Wolverine: Old Man Logan mini-series it is revealed that in the future the villains have risen up and defeated the superheroes, leaving Logan, now a husband and father, emotionally scarred and no longer willing to fight. The villains (including the Hulk) have each claimed territories around the United States, ruling them with an iron fist. Tragically, Logan’s wife Maureen, son Scotty, and daughter Jade are all killed by Hulk’s offspring, who run the western lands on which Logan and his family live and work. This is more or less where Old Man Logan picks up.
Hailing from that dystopian future, Logan wakes up in present-day Times Square, unsure of how he got there. Through vague memories of the Wasteland from which he came, Logan soon recalls his family’s murder. We are shown flashback scenes from the future, where Logan’s clan struggles to survive in a post-apocalyptic world, bartering with criminals and living under the thumb of the Hulk’s gang. Through visions of this future/past, we are introduced to the criminal Black Butcher, the first name on Logan’s hit list once he arrives in New York.
Not being all that familiar with the Secret Wars and Wolverine: Old Man Logan arcs, I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy Old Man Logan. Fortunately, I was quickly pulled into the story, even without the deep historical knowledge. The artwork is fantastic and the writing, which is reminiscent of classic film noir, appears solid. The revenge aspect isn’t an entirely revolutionary premise, but the intricate and unusual background of the characters make up for that shortcoming. Issue one is a good introduction and I can’t wait to see where this story goes and how it picks up steam.
Series writer Jeff Lemire has said that he is excited about the direction in which he can take Logan who, he is quick to point out, is no longer Wolverine. Now that he doesn’t have the constraints of the costume, it will be interesting to find out what is in store for this tortured and multi-layered character. If the past is any indication, whatever happens will probably be awful for Logan and fascinating for fans.
